DJ Falcon & Thomas Bangalter: “Together”

Amidst the attention heaped on the probable prototype of Daft Punk’s “Contact”, enjoy the Falcon/Bangalter track its “are we in this thing alone, or are we in it together” vocal sample is referencing.

Really enjoying this downtempo R&B track.

R.I.P. George Jones

Even if you think you aren’t into country, give George Jones a chance: To start with the obvious, his voice was astonishing. More than that he took well-worn subjects and approached them with a delicacy, depth, and weariness that is rare and special, When his characters fail, there’s a sense of inevitability behind it that is all the more tragic because it feels like it wasn’t the first or the last time. He somehow sings with a heavy sigh and anguished cry at the same time. The way the narratives unfold in “The Grand Tour“ or “He Stopped Loving Her Today” (above)— it’s just flat-out great storytelling. They’re beautifully sketched moments unspooled for maximum impact, which is something for whatever reason that country artists seem to do a lot better than rock and hip-hop ones— probably in part because a guy like Jones showed three generations of fellow country artists how to do it right.
